GRADING:
This year, I am structuring the class like an online course with the NEISD Learner Profile in mind. We will be progressing through units. Students can work during class time and at home. During each unit, students will have a specific amount of time to do all graded assignments. There is no state adopted textbook, so learning will be internet based along with materials brought into the classroom. Grades will be based on the following:
Labs: 40%
Projects: 20%
Quiz: 20%
Daily: 20%
It is expected that all students will be honorable, embracing integrity, and do their own work, especially since notes and paperwork can be used on the quiz. Students will have specific labs to work through and will have an additional foods lab of their choice in each unit that focuses on the principles of that unit. Students will also be able to choose their project for each unit. Students will be encouraged to choose projects that are technology based. Teacher approval must be acquired for student chosen projects and labs.
FOOD SCIENCE NOTEBOOK:
All students will develop a FOOD SCIENCE NOTEBOOK over the course of the year. This notebook will be a way to organize each unit that is covered in the class. All work will be kept in the notebook. You will need to bring a traditional spiral bound type notebook or 3 ring binder. This notebook is required to keep all completed Food Science information available and in order. This notebook should be kept for the duration of the course; therefore, the notebook should be added to with each unit and kept until the end of the year.
THINGS TO BRING EVERY DAY:
Your respect, integrity and and interest in learning are the most important things you can bring to class. Also bring your Food Science notebook with paper, pen, highlighter, and/or if you have any of these: Ipad, computer, smart phone (note that all data plans apply if you do not use the NEISD guest network, new network should be in place around October).
ABSENCES AND TARDIES:
A tardy is defined as not being in the room when attendance is taken. A student should bring a note from a teacher if s/he is kept late by another teacher. Come to class every day (unless you are sick). Check the board, google classroom and/or Mrs. Wales’ blog (http://dawnwales.weebly.com/) for this unit’s assignments and timelines. Check with a teammate about work missed during the absence. Check with Mrs. Wales at a time other than during class instructions, discussion, etc. If it is an assignment that I can share with you on google docs, I will. Complete assignments by the unit deadline. Remember, it is your responsibility to get your work done on time, and you can be working from home. Do not leave things to the last minute, or you will be unable to take the unit assessment. If you are absent for a foods lab for any reason (illness, ISS, AHS,college visit, etc.) , it can be made up at home by cooking that recipe, taking pictures or a video of you making it and showing it to me or emailing it to me. Science labs may or may not be possible to make up; thus, I always drop a few labs each grading period. Again, the way this class is structured, an absence or two should not prevent you from getting your work turned in on time.
GOOGLE DOCS:
To log into your account use:
student [email protected]
Password: XXXXXXXX. All documents should be shared with Dawn Wales([email protected]) and the file name should always be Period X..Project Name..Your Name
We will be using Google Classroom to turn in electronic work.
TUTORING: mornings 8:00-8:30
after school 4:05 – 5:30
6th Period Lunch
TURNING IN WORK:
Labs: Lab paperwork is to help the student understand concepts and prepare for the quiz. Lab paperwork should be kept in your notebook.
Projects: Turning in projects will greatly depend on the type of project chosen. Some will be turned in on google docs, some emailed, and some handed to the teacher. **If it is a group project, it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that the project gets turned in. **
Quiz: It is the student's responsibility to turn in his/her work for grading. Once a unit test (2 page layout) is due, late work will not be accepted for that unit. Late work will have the required points deducted as per NEISD policy.
PROJECTS TURNED IN WITHOUT A NAME: These are graded and filed in a "missing papers" file. IT IS THE STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to retrieve and sign the papers and return them to be recorded. If these papers are not IDENTIFIED AND RETURNED BEFORE the nine weeks averages are done, THEY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
CELL PHONES:
Refer to the policy in the student handbook. We will be using the cell phone as a technology tool in class. Inappropriate use of the cell phone during class time will be referred to the discipline process. All cell phones are to be kept above the table top and in teacher’s sight or they will be put away. Texting is only for school purposes, not for social visiting.
FOOD:
Food and/or beverages are allowed in the classroom if you throw away all trash. If you leave a mess, you will lose this privilege. The entire class can lose this privilege because of one or more individuals. Being tardy to class because you are getting food is not acceptable.
Since we will be cooking in this class, there are some rules that go along with that. Food cannot be taken out of the classroom or shared with others not in the class. No food is to be eaten until the proper evaluation has been done. If you forget your groceries for your extra chosen lab, you CANNOT leave campus and go to HEB. Plan ahead! If this lab is missed, you may or may not be able to make it up during class time.
BATHROOM:
o Take care of your bathroom needs between classes. Plan ahead.
o Students will only be allowed to the bathroom during class for emergencies if they demonstrate trustworthiness and are gone for only short periods of time.
o No bathroom passes during labs.
o No leaving the room without a pass.
GROUP ACTIVITIES:
1. Be an active member of the group
2. Stay on task
3. Learn everyone’s name in your group
4. Clean up your activity station when done
5. Expect to be with different group members for different projects
6. Try to get out of your comfort zone and try something new
VIDEOS/DVD’S:
We don’t see many, but when we do, watch the DVD/clip without talking. Take notes if instructed to do so. Some videos will need to be watched at home in preparation for the class.
WHEN MRS. WALES IS GONE:
With an exploratory type of classroom, it will be harder on substitutes. Therefore, follow all classroom expectations; help the substitute and make sure there are no discipline referrals. Do not waste time. You should work on any Food Science unit work that you can without my presence (however, substitutes cannot hand out iPads or take you to the computer lab).
**STUDENTS CANNOT DO A LAB WITHOUT MRS. WALES’ PRESENCE!**
NEISD DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE ON THE BASIS OF RACE, COLOR, RELIGION, GENDER, NATIONAL ORIGIN, GE OR DIABILITY IN ITS PROGRAMS OR ACTIVITIES.
